Gas Migration Test (GMT) a bentonite sand barrier (EBS) and rock in the Grimsel Rock Laboratory, Switzerland The Gas Migration Test (GMT) is a large-scale demonstration experiment in to understand the characteristics of underground silos designed for storing radioactive waste. The objective of the GMT experiment is to understand the flow of gas through the engineered and natural barriers (more information is available at the following website: http://www.nagra.ch/english/forsch/f_grimsel.htm).
Solexperts was contracted to design, manufacture and install a system to monitor relevant test parameters. Solexperts manufactured and installed 9 multi-packer systems (in the surrounding rock) and approximately 250 sensors (EBS), including saturation sensors (TDRs), pore-water pressure sensors, load cells, and temperature sensors. The test phase began in summer of 2001 after installation of all of the sensors and a Solexperts data acquisition system (GeoMonitor) and implementation of a Solexperts data visualization system (DAVIS).
Solexperts was also contracted to conduct hydraulic and pneumatic tests between August 2001 and May 2004. Parallel to the field testing, Solexperts conducted a number of laboratory test focused on predicting field reactions in order to optimize planning of the field tests. |
