Tailings Dam Monitoring; Curdworth Sludge Lagoon

An innovative combined leakage and deformation monitoring system has been installed at the century-old Curdworth Mud Lagoon, part of the Minworth Sewage Treatment Works in north Birmingham, UK.

Details of the Fibre Optic Monitoring Systems

The leakage measurement system is based on the complementary use of a fibre optic DTS (Distributed Temperature Sensing) system and the heat pulse method, which provides information on water content and water flows in the near field of the fibre optic cable. Monitoring of deformations in the dam body is also done with fibre optic cable and the Distributed Temperature and Strain Sensing (DTSS) method.
